The challenge

As part of a major two-story extension and upgrade to this large, detached house in Kenilworth in Warwickshire, the screeding contractor ACP Coventry was asked by the client to install floor screed on the ground floor over an insulated slab, covering approximately 50m2. The floor specification would be 45mm of floating screed over a heavy-duty polythene liner covering around 100 millimetres of insulation. In line with guidance, a foam liner was used against the wall to allow for expansion in the screed and reduce the risk of cracking. Having used Tarmac’s TOPFLOW range of screeds before, they contractor recommended TOPFLOW Screed C a fast-drying cement based liquid screed.

Our solution

TOPFLOW Screed C is a freeflowing, cement based liquid screed that can be trafficked after just 24-48 hours and dries within 21-28 days. It can be pumped into place and allows large areas to be covered quickly with up to 120m2 laid in as little as 45 minutes. The free-flowing, self-compacting properties of TOPFLOW Screed C make it far less labour intensive than traditional alternatives, as it doesn’t require hand finishing or final sanding to achieve a smooth, even surface. The fast-drying times and early trafficking characteristics of TOPFLOW Screed C enabled other trades to follow on quickly, helping to provide continuity and efficiency within the client’s build programme. It is also compatible with most cement-based adhesives meaning it can be used with a wide range of flooring types.

Results and benefits

As planned around 2.5m3 of TOPFLOW Screed C was supplied in one of the nimble, compact Ablemix mixers. It arrived on schedule just as all of the site preparation had been completed. Tarmac’s experienced Technical Sales Representative was on site to receive the mix, check for compliance with specification and help the contractor deliver the best possible finish for their client. The contractor was delighted with the outcome, commenting on how good the material was to work with and on the excellent finish achieved. As some of the windows still had to be installed the site, temporary covers over door window openings were used to prevent wind chill and evaporation while the screed cured. Another great result for the contractor ACP Coventry, Tarmac’s technical support and Ablemix.
