The challenge

As part of a £10M project to transform a known traffic and accident black spot funded by TfL and London Borough of Newham, new surfacing was required for the road, footways and new cycle lanes. The scheme involved converting a one mile long gyratory system to two-way traffic, creating new two-way cycle lanes. This incorporated thirteen junctions including six new pedestrian crossings and installing traffic calming measures at each of the seven main crossings. A key priority was to complete the works with minimal disruption in the third busiest centre in London. Traffic and pedestrian management was required to keep carriageways and footways open throughout the project. The new surface would also need to withstand large volumes of traffic including the six bus routes that serve this transport hub.

Our solution

To surface the carriageways, ULTILAYER S 10mm 68 PSV, Tarmac’s flexible, polymer modified stone mastic asphalt was substituted for the original 14mm design. It offers a dense, durable surface resists the heavy trafficking and turning forces, including those from buses. For the cycleways, the client moved away from a 6mm DBM at 25mm depth and binder at 60mm depth to ULTIFASTPATH in a single layer. ULTIFASTATH can be laid up to 70mm deep in a single pass, which allowed the cycle lanes to be reopened more quickly. Using a single layer approach meant works could be completed more quickly than the original specification allowed and handed back for use ahead of schedule, therefore reducing disruption and costs.

Results and benefits

As planned the work was successfully completed by Riney within the specified programme. The client, London Borough of Newham were delighted to complete the works ahead of schedule and within budget. They were also impressed by Riney’s innovative approach to the scheme and their access to Tarmac’s high performance asphalts. As a result of this scheme, traffic flow has been improved through an area that was previously subject to heavy congestion. Local pedestrians and cyclists also benefit from increased safety, through traffic calming measures and segregated traffic flows. These additional benefits helped to encourage others to use more sustainable forms of transport, in line with the Mayor of London’s goals.
