The challenge

Hatton Court is a new housing development in the village of Hatton, Derbyshire. Located just a two minute drive from the centre of the village, these 2, 3, 4, and 5-bedroom homes in this large estate ranged from first time buyer homes to luxury family homes. The estate would be of significant size, with around 135 houses due to be built. Driveway surfacing was required for all of these new homes, that would deliver an excellent and long-lasting finish for the eventual owners. After experiencing failure of driveway surfaces in the past, due to issues like scuffing, fretting and softening, Bellway were keen to explore other materials that provided better resistance and longer lasting performance. During discussions with Tarmac’s regional TPSM, ULTIDRIVE asphalt was identified as a solution.

Our solution

After previous failures of conventional materials, Bellway specified Tarmac’s ULTIDRIVE 6mm asphalt for the driveways on this development to prevent defects and failures. Designed to resist the long-term effects of daily vehicle movement, ULTIDRIVE is a high performance asphalt with a smooth and highly durable finish. An advanced modified binder provides improved resistance to scuffing, abrasion and fretting from power-assisted turning. It also reduces softening in hot weather and provides enhanced resistance to temporary fuel and oil spills compared to conventional asphalt. The chosen surfacing contractor, M&J Evans, is highly experienced in laying specialist asphalts. Having successfully used ULTIDRIVE elsewhere, they were keen to use it in on this site to optimise durability and pavement life for their client.

Results and benefits

As expected, ULTIDRIVE performed well on site and the contractor was able to consistently achieve an excellent finish. By choosing a better driveway surfacing material, with enhanced resistance to scuffing, abrasion and fretting from power assisted turning, the client was confident that their customers would get a far better long-term outcome. Following the successful delivery of this scheme, Bellway decided to specify ULTIDRIVE for all of their housing developments in the Midlands area. The material out-performs conventional materials and prevents complaints on new driveways, delivering higher quality for Bellway Homes customers and avoiding costly and disruptive remedials. A true win-win for the contractor, the housebuilder and their customers.
