Thin concrete solution for flooring at a school

The floors in two classrooms at Coed-Y-Brain School were ingressing water and a solution needed to be found. The screed topping on the original floor had become water damaged and needed to be replaced. The architect specified that the screed topping was to be replaced with a waterproof bitumen product to stop any future water ingress. Using bitumen meant that it would be very difficult to obtain a flat level surface, therefore another levelling material would have to be used. The floor varied in depth from 15mm to 50mm from the required final finish level. Typically self levelling or smoothing compounds would be used but this would have been a slow and expensive process.

Minimix proposed the use of TOPFLOW SCREED A EXCELIO which is an anhydrite screed specifically designed for use in bonded construction ideally between 12-30mm. EXCELIO provides the thinnest ready-mixed screed solution and is designed to bridge the gap between bagged self levelling materials and bonded sand cement screeds. EXCELIO offers the unique ability to install a 12mm bonded screed whilst gaining the benefits of a ready-mixed, factory produced product. This greatly improves productivity and reduces site labour and operations compared to traditional self levelling/ smoothing compounds. 1m³ of the material replaces 70 x 25kg bags of pre-blended material and eliminates the need for site mixing.

Working closely with a registered, approved screed contractor, Minimix were able to supply 2.6m³ of EXCELIO to the site. Saving time and money, the floor was poured and finished in under 1 hour and achieved an SR1 surface regularity.
