MP Matthew Pennycook discovers the beginnings of iconic London projects on visit to Tarmac Greenwich Wharf

October 6, 2022

Tarmac welcomed leading local politician Matthew Pennycook, Labour MP for Greenwich and Woolwich, along with councillors David Gardner and Nick Williams from Greenwich Council, on a visit to its Greenwich Wharf site.

The site delivers aggregates to the wider Charlton area, acting as a hub for essential construction materials which are distributed across London and beyond. Projects supplied through Tarmac Greenwich Wharf include The Shard, The Elizabeth Line and Thames Tideway.

Steve Wallis, area operations manager for Tarmac, said: “We were really pleased to have Matthew Pennycook, along with the councillors from Greenwich Council on site. There is a lot more than meets the eye with what we do as a business, and it was great to share some of that with them today.

“Our site plays a huge role in the local economy, which can be seen through some of the projects we’ve supplied to date. Matthew and the councillors seemed impressed by the impact we’ve had, and we hope to share the success of many more projects with them in the future.”

Matthew Pennycook MP said: “The presence of an established aggregate terminal alongside new residential development undoubtedly creates challenges but they need to be managed given the importance of safeguarded wharves as a critical low carbon route for materials into London.

“It was a pleasure to visit Tarmac Greenwich Wharf to discuss relations with the neighbouring GMV [Greenwich Millennium Village] community, as well as crucial wider issues including industrial decarbonisation and maximising the use of the rail freight network for product distribution.”
