Did you know that Tarmac has a Marine division, made up of a fleet of four dredgers that operates off the south coast of England, the Bristol Channel and the North Sea? They’re responsible for delivering natural sand and gravel aggregates to our sites across the country.
The oldest of the fleet – the City of London – has been operational since 1989. It’s currently undergoing vital repairs and maintenance at the UK Docks facility in Middlesbrough to ensure its optimal functionality for many more years to come.
The refurbishment works includes special surveys, a major engine overhaul and extensive steel work, which will involve many sections of its structures being replaced. There will also be inspections and equipment overhauls – extending to everything from the dredger’s alternators to the sea survival and firefighting equipment.
Daniel Penfold, Marine fleet manager, explained: “It’s a highly complicated project. It involves hundreds of individual jobs shared between more than 25 subcontractors.
“It wouldn’t be possible without the hard work, professionalism and dedication of everyone involved. Their commitment to ensuring the vessel remains in excellent condition, even after decades at sea, is truly commendable.”
Upon completion of its repair and maintenance work, the vessel will set sail again as it resumes its normal operations around the UK, primarily delivering to our wharfs on the Thames.

Since 1989, the City of London has landed more than 28 million tonnes of material. It operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, thanks to our two dedicated crews of highly-trained seafarers.
