Tarmac was proud to help celebrate community heroes at the prestigious Gateshead Awards 2021, held this week.
Due to the ongoing pandemic, the city’s annual awards were cancelled in 2020 but Gateshead Council, in partnership with Tarmac, Gateshead Regeneration Partnership, Go North East, HY Hubs, Metrocentre and Northgate Vehicle Hire reinstated the popular event for 2021 – with the first virtual awards ceremony held on 30th June.
Tarmac sponsored the Voluntary/Charitable Organisation of the Year category – won by Dunston Help for Families.
The charity was established mid-pandemic to support local people who were struggling with a range of issues during lockdown. Volunteers have raised funds for food parcels, delivered hot meals to vulnerable residents, recycled unwanted items, arranged a secret Santa for Dunston children and are now fundraising for new security lighting to be installed locally.
Tarmac’s John Riley, area director, Scotland & NE England, materials, said: “As a proud partner to Gateshead Council, it has been a pleasure to show our support for the 2021 Gateshead Awards.
“Congratulations to the well-deserved winning team from Dunston Help for Families! We look forward to working with them over the coming year.
“The awards celebrate all that is great about Gateshead and shine a spotlight on local people and community groups that make a huge difference to the lives of others. Alongside the other award sponsors, we’re proud to honour these local heroes and thank Gateshead Council for what was a brilliant event.”
The awards recognise people across the borough who go out of their way to help others and to support their community.
Mayor of Gateshead, Councillor Dot Burnett, who presented the awards, said: “The last year-and-a-half has shown, more than ever, what can be achieved if we pull together and I’m very proud that we are once again able to host these awards to celebrate all those who go the extra mile to help others.”
