Visitors to a Welsh nature reserve can enjoy picnics amid the bluebells and spring flowers again thanks to a donation from Tarmac.
When thieves stole picnic tables from a rest area in the Coed y Felin nature reserve, Tarmac was quick to step in to help replace the much-needed tables.
Jordan Hurst, reserves officer at the North Wales Wildlife Trust (NWWT), which manages the nature reserve next door to Tarmac’s Hendre Quarry, said: “It was heart-breaking when thieves stole the original tables, so we are very grateful to Tarmac for paying to replace them.“Two picnic tables were stolen from the lower disabled-friendly path, despite being anchored into the ground. They are a real help to visitors to the reserve when they want to stop and enjoy the scenery.
“The disabled-access tables sit right among the bluebells and other flora in the area and with Spring just around the corner, it will soon be a riot of colour. Already people are saying how appreciative they are of the rest spot.
“We have sourced recycled plastic tables from a local company in North Wales, which have the added bonuses of being more robust and are a sustainable choice.”
Tarmac, which owns the land and pays an annual donation to NWWT for the management of the Coed y Felin nature reserve next to Hendre Quarry, agreed to fund the tables on top of the yearly contribution.
Conor Mitchell, manager at Hendre Quarry, said: “At Tarmac we fully appreciate the benefits being outdoors can bring to visitors to Coed y Felin and the picnic areas are vital to providing rest stops and somewhere to eat outdoors.”
“The volunteers and staff of NWWT have done a fine job of ensuring access for all and the picnic tables ensure even people in wheelchairs can access these tranquil spots in which to enjoy a bite to eat.”
