Amid a climate emergency and rising commitments to net zero targets within construction and infrastructure settings, there is a pressing need for more sustainable approaches to road development and highways maintenance.
Delivering technological solutions and innovation which prioritise sustainability – from using lower carbon materials to incorporating recycled content – are key to the Tarmac approach.
With this in mind, we are proud to launch a new online framework designed to support those involved in specifying and maintaining the UK’s crucial network of roads and highways: the Guide to Sustainable Road building.
Its launch reflects our approach as a business and is rooted in the principles and targets set out in our 2030 sustainability strategy. The guide also highlights solutions, technological advances and examples of best practice in a bid to inform and influence the decision-making process involved when designing high performing, yet lower carbon approaches to road development.
Covering a range of topics and expert guidance, themes include:
- How to use lower carbon materials
- Ways to use more recycled content
- How to reduce material usage and avoid waste
- Steps to build roads that last longer
- The principles of sustainable contracting
- Building better infrastructure and environments
- Stories about sustainable road building and highways maintenance best practice from across the UK
Brian Kent, Tarmac’s technical director, said: “Accelerating the journey to net zero has never been higher on the agenda. We recognise that we, as a leader in the sector, have a key role to play in shaping our industry’s approach to sustainability and in delivering sustainable construction methods and products.
“The introduction of our new guide is an important step forward to help our customers, partners and the industry to understand what innovations are currently available – leading to carbon savings, less impact on the environment and more sustainable decisions being made.”
