An innovative inflatable safety barrier designed by Tarmac has been highly commended at the 2020 Chartered Institute of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) awards.
Designed to resemble concrete, the new inflatable barriers aim to reduce worksite breaches by acting as a visual deterrent to road users and increasing the safety of onsite highways maintenance workers.
The innovation, which was successfully trialled on the M25 in collaboration with Connect Plus Services and Highways England, was recognised in the CIHT’s Kier Road Safety category. This celebrates outstanding achievements in road safety through excellent practice, design and technical application.
Following the introduction of the barriers zero incursions have been recorded compared to 172 incidents, over the previous 12-month period.

The CIHT Awards were celebrated with a virtual ceremony on June 23rd. Tarmac’s innovation in product development was also recognised with its rubber modified asphalt being shortlisted in the Amey Innovation of the Year category.
