Tarmac, the UK’s leading sustainable construction solutions and building materials company, has secured a major new highways contract with Wiltshire Council.
Effective from 1st June 2020, the agreement worth approximately £25m, will run for an initial period of five years, with the option of a two-year extension subject to meeting a series of performance-related targets.
The contract will see Tarmac continuing to deliver resurfacing works across the whole of the county’s extensive network of over 3,000 miles of road, having successfully delivered a similar programme of work for the Council over the previous seven years.
The company’s commitment to safety, quality and delivery, as well as its approach to social value and carbon reduction were key factors in securing the contract, with sustainability criteria included in the tender assessment process.

As part of the new agreement, Tarmac is committed to supporting the Council’s objective to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and become net zero by 2030 through a range of measures and approaches including driving improved efficiencies, rolling out digital technology and incorporating new technical innovations. This will include continuing the extensive use of low-temperature asphalts across Wiltshire’s highways network, which deliver substantial carbon savings in both manufacturing and installation compared to traditional materials and at no extra cost.

The innovative digital technologies used by Tarmac will contribute towards our target to make Wiltshire carbon neutral by 2030, while also ensuring our highways network is maintained to a safe standard for the people of Wiltshire.”
Tarmac will also continue local community engagement across the county through its social value programme, which involves employees setting time aside to volunteer for community projects and acting as STEM ambassadors in local schools.
