Tarmac, the UK’s leading sustainable building materials and construction solutions business, today (Friday 8 March) welcomes International Women’s Day.
Speaking on International Women’s Day, Louise Houston, Head of Talent, Diversity and Inclusion, said: “International Women’s Day is a great opportunity for Tarmac to celebrate the many achievements and successes of our women, and to celebrate the increased diversity and inclusion of our workforce.
“It is extremely important to us for everyone – regardless of their background or circumstances – to have equal opportunities in the workplace. For this to happen, our employees need to feel empowered, to aim high, and to challenge stereotypes. That is why we are looking closely at the inclusion and diversity of our workforce, and seeing what more we can do to ensure that we attract the best possible diverse and inclusive talent to Tarmac.”
To mark International Women’s Day, Tarmac, which has partnered with organisations such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and the 5% Club, is holding a small number of events, including a coffee morning at Aberthaw cement plant for plant employees, members of the company’s Women in Cement networking group, and Tarmac employees from across Wales.
The coffee morning focused on a range of topics, which included protective equipment (PPE) for women, discussions on the group’s future plans, welfare facilities, role models, opportunities to attract more women into the construction sector, and the Red Box project.
The Red Box project is a nationwide initiative which provides free menstrual products for young people in local schools to ensure that no young person misses school because they have their period. In the lead up to International Women’s Day 2019 Tarmac’s Aberthaw cement plant led a campaign to help tackle the issue of ‘period poverty’ from across the local area.
