Sustainable building materials and construction solutions business Tarmac has become the first company to sign the Hertfordshire Growth Board’s Hertfordshire Development Quality Charter, reaffirming its commitment to sustainable development in the county.
At a ceremony with Hertfordshire County Council leader Richard Roberts to mark the signing, Michael Holloway, development manager at Tarmac, spoke about the importance of collaboration in helping to create communities which benefit local people, as well as enhancing the environment.
The new Quality Charter seeks to embed the principles of sustainability into projects from the earliest stage, through the voluntary commitment of developers and other built environment stakeholders to a series of pledges. Key among the pledges are commitments to master planning and community engagement; incorporating social value and environmental management systems into business models; and adhering to sustainability standards which exceed the minimum standards set out in building regulations.
Michael Holloway, development manager at Tarmac, said: “With thousands of acres of land under our stewardship and a long-standing commitment to Hertfordshire, we recognise our duty to manage these assets responsibly and to facilitate positive outcomes for our business, the community and future generations.
“By signing the Hertfordshire Development Quality Charter, which sets out a new standard for high quality and sustainable development in the county, we’re proud to demonstrate our commitment to the local area. We’d encourage both private and public sector bodies which share this vision for the future of the county to get behind the charter.”
Cllr. Richard Roberts, leader of Hertfordshire County Council, said: “When we launched the Development Quality Charter in September, I asked all those involved in development activity in Hertfordshire to sign up and contribute towards delivering high-quality new homes and buildings which meet the latest environmental standards.
“It’s fantastic news that Tarmac have been the first company to sign up to the Charter and will now be creating quality and sustainable new developments in the county.
“I’m asking all those involved in development activity in Hertfordshire to sign up to the Charter and contribute to our county continuing to thrive for generations to come.”
