Employees from Tarmac’s Tunstead Cement Plant, in Buxton, came together for a day of activities to mark World Environment Day.
Led by the United Nations Environment Programme, World Environment Day is held annually on 5 June and celebrates environmental action and the power of governments, businesses and individuals to create a more sustainable world.
As well as being the event’s 50th anniversary, this year focused specifically on the theme of ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ – calling for global solutions to combat plastic pollution.
A series of activities took place at Tunstead Cement Plant, including a session with partner organisation, the Peak District National Park Authority, on local volunteering opportunities.
A workshop from the Environment Agency facilitated ideas for future decarbonisation projects, while the team also heard from Erusa Adizie, net zero manager, who gave a talk on Tarmac’s recently launched roadmap to net zero. Paul Vaines Engineering Services and Eco Spill then hosted a training session covering the latest techniques in managing spillages, which remains vital in preventing pollution on construction sites.
To finish the day, employees planted native trees and shrubs in a new green space located on-site – designed to enhance local biodiversity and to complement the natural surroundings of the Peak District. Together, the team also buried a time capsule which contained a carbon road map, sustainability polices, photos of team members and messages with their environmental hopes for the future.

“World Environment Day is just one way of focusing our attention on how we can all make a difference, as individuals, teams and businesses, and it was great to be able to mark the event with a full day of activities for everyone here. What’s more, everyone who came along left with a packet of ‘bee kind’ seeds to build on the work we’ve been doing when in their own gardens at home.”
