The winning entries have been announced for the fourth annual Tarmac sponsored Passivhaus Trust design competition, which sought entries from students on new building projects and the retrofitting of existing buildings.
Students were tasked with assessing material choices and how their proposals impact the wider context of the design in delivering low carbon, high performance buildings. Judges looked for schemes that clearly identified a Passivhaus strategy, which were each tested through energy system modelling and on how design choices were justified.
Passivhaus tutors, informative seminars, software tutorials, inspiring study tours, and exhibitions, all played a part in selecting and shortlisting entries.
Winners of the 2019 Passivhaus Student Competition are:
- Latifa Mohammed, Oxford Brookes – Mealan: Versatile food hub – A street food market and a learning, cultural hub for staff and student accommodation.
- Sergi, Sahil & Santiago, University of Sheffield: House-S Project – A detached two storey home which aims to achieve high energy efficiency levels featuring low impact materials and high insulation levels.
- Thomas Newton, University of Nottingham: Regenerare – An aquaponic urban farm linked to affordable residential housing.
Commended entries for the 2019 Passivhaus Student Competition are –
- Syed Asmar Ul Hassan & Xin Huang, University of Nottingham: The Guided Labyrinth – An urban rejuvenation design of a complex building design.
- Katie de Silva, Oxford Brookes: Piazza Fluente – Drawing inspiration from Leonardo da Vinci, this is a design for an active museum.

The winners will be presented with their awards at the prize-giving ceremony, which will take place at the 2019 UK Passivhaus Conference in October in Salford. Details on how to enter the 2020 award schemes will be announced at the prize-giving ceremony.
