Designated Concretes

There are various methods of specifying concrete to BS 8500. The most popular are designated. Designated classification makes the selection of the appropriate concrete simpler.

Designated concretes are essentially identified by their application and are fit for purpose. The user has assurance that the designated concrete will provide the required performance without having to go through the complicated process of specifying a designed concrete

Designated concrete classification does not cover all building applications but offer quality assurance for a number including agricultural, housing and structural applications.

There are four main designated concretes – General (GEN), Foundation (FND), Reinforced (RC) and Pavement (PAV).

General ConcreteThe core concretes used for housing and non-structural building applications are categorised under Gen designation.
Foundation ConcreteA concrete foundation is the most common mainly because it's the most versatile.
Reinforced ConcreteReinforced concrete (RC) is a versatile composite. It is one of the most widely used materials in construction today.
Paving ConcretePaving concrete is the ideal material for the construction of parking and working areas around buildings.
