Lime added to mortar makes it more workable and offers improved durability over standard mortars. It also helps to minimise cracking as the mix dries out.

Traditional concrete only mixes were prone to taking on moisture from the atmosphere. This caused the mortar to expand and contract as it heated and cooled.

Also the water in the mortar would be susceptible to freezing. All this would mean your mortar, over time, would crumble.

Adding lime to mortar reduces water intake and unlike traditional concrete mixes lime mortars are less prone to taking water from the atmosphere. Lime in mortar reduces the chances of crumbling.

Thanks to better bedding of bricks and blocks, correct filling of prep-end joints and maximum void fill, the bond created by lime-based mortar is incredibly strong. Add to that its inherent crack control and self-repair and you can see why lime based mortar is so resistant to rain penetration, wind, freezing, thawing, wetting and drying. In practice, this means much less maintenance than sand: cement mortars require.

Lime based mortars offer improved waterproofing qualities and better withstand shrink cracking.

By using lime-based mortar the movement of buildings during and after construction is easily absorbed. Cracking of lime-based mortars is minimal and any that does occur tends to be micro-cracking rather than the major cracking associated with more brittle sand: cement mortars. However, if microcracking does occur, lime-based mortar can heal the cracks and seal the surface, thus wholly maintaining the integrity of the building. This process is known as ‘autogenous healing’ or ‘Heal and Seal’.
